- ░ QUICK PREVIEW ░ - Networks
-
-
-
- ░ PURPOSE of Virus ALERT for NETWORKS
- ────────────────────────────────────────────
- Special note: if you have just received a copy of Virus
- ALERT, and are dying to know how healthy your network is,
- use option (N) in the 'Utilities and Other Options' menu
- to go immediately to the NETSCAN menu. In the menu choose
- option (1) to do a complete global scan of your network,
- including all logical drives, and all files.
-
- When finished, return to this quick preview and continue.
-
- Virus ALERT is an indispensable adjunct for any good antivirus
- regime (such as an NLM) on any site, large or small.
-
- ALERT is compatible with all known networks, and requires
- no special protocols from one network to the next. The
- few known idiosyncrasies are discussed near the end of the
- Network.doc, option (2) in this pop-up.
-
-
- Virus ALERT augments the protection of a good NLM or server
- protector by making sure that the end user PCs on a network
- site are not infected, period, and by allowing supervisors the
- luxury of conducting lightning fast top quality maintenance
- scans down the network from the convenience of their own
- terminal, both selective and global.
-
- The efficiency of Virus ALERT for networks is not
- affected by the size or complexity of the site.
-
-
-
- ░ NETWORK OPTIONS
- ──────────────────────────
- When used at the end user's PC level of a site, Virus ALERT can
- be run from any of the ordinary ALERT menus, or from command lines.
- If used at the server end, use command lines, or for convenience
- use the special NETSCAN menu, Option (N) in the 'Utilities and
- Other Options' menu.
-
-
-
-
-
- ░ QUICK - ONE SHOT - FULL NETWORK SCANS
- ───────────────────────────────────────
- Option (1) in the NetScan menu scans all logical
- drives and all files in the network path. This means
- that ALERT scans the whole network in one quick shot.
-
- Thus if the network is small or smallish, or is
- managed by non technically trained personal, the
- option is ideal for frequent (no input required)
- full network spot checks from the server. If the
- network is larger, obviously the problem of looping
- and drive(s) duplication will occur. But ALERT
- scans are so fast that the problem is moot.
-
- The option is also perfect for a network technician
- on any sized site, who has just (say) received a copy
- of ALERT for evaluation and is dying to know if the
- network is healthy or not.
-
- The option allows the technician to do a full tilt
- scan of the whole network without having to trial
- and error the command line switches.
-
-
- In fact, the technician basically doesn't need to know anything
- whatsoever about ALERT, other than this Quick Preview.
-
-
- ░ THE USER OPTIONAL SCAN MENU
- ─────────────────────────────────
- Option (2) in the NetScan menu offers a choice of scans.
- Choice (1) allows the user to state a drive(s) to scan.
- Choice (2) scans only the current computer. All choices
- in the menu are set to scan all files in the path.
-
- Scanning paths can be one drive, or as many as you want.
- For example: A: B: D: H: L: M: or, A:\ B:\ D:\ etc.
-
- As a special note, option (2) in ALERT's Utilities menu, accessed
- through option (O) in the 'Utilities and Other Options' menu, is
- a special menu for doing selective path scans, including file and
- extension groups.
-
- Therefore, if you need to do selective path scans down a
- network, you may find the utility menu more encompassing
- than choice (1) of the netscan menu.
-
-
- You can of course also do them by command line. The
- advantage of using the Utilities menu is that you
- do not have to leave ALERT to do them.
-
-
- ░ OTHER SITE RELATED MENU OPTIONS
- ──────────────────────────────────
- The Command line document, option (L) in the 'Utilities and
- Other Options' menu, provides all information for running ALERT
- from a command line, with numerous switch options.
-
- The Technical.doc, option (T), contains ALERT's technical
- stats, plus descriptions of ALERT's heuristic scanner's
- names and flags.
-
- Option (O), to return to the 'Utilities and Other Options'
- menu, is also a route to ALERT's two full-time automatic
- protection features, ONGUARD and VaGUARD.
-
- Both ONGUARD and VaGUARD are essential for any well protected
- site, and both are discussed in more detail under their respective
- headings in the Network.doc, option (2) in this Quick Preview screen.
-
-
- Note that the Quick Preview in the Netscan menu
- is actually just a quick pop-up reminder of the
- different Netscan options as discussed further
- above.
